DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMME:
Continuing Education for Working Professionals.
(A Report) :
The increased competition and the new
markets thrown open to the Indian Industry, necessitates quality, cost
reduction, innovations and diversification in products and services, and
developments and transfer of technology essential. These in turn need for
large scale redeployment and retraining of the work force.
Institute of Printing Technology is tuned, increasingly, to meet the
requirements of continuing education of working professionals, to update and
upgrade their knowledge by offering courses for varying purposes including
updating knowledge and skills preparation for functional as well as career
changes, obtaining advanced professional degrees, appreciation/awareness
programs etc.
The continuing education is the utmost need of the hour ,and the most
difficult to provide. The Management of Institute of Printing Technology
plays an important role for uplifting the knowledge of working
professionals.
INTRODUCTION:
To survive and remain competitive in a climate of such rapid scientific and
technological advances, industrial establishments must undergo continuous
structural and technological changes to develop new products and services
and tap new avenues and markets. The development of modern science and
technology and the demand for competent people caused by market competition
are the development of continuing education programme in India.
To cope up with the changing demands of industry and society, engineers and
working professionals have no choice but to constantly update and renew
their knowledge through continuing education. Professionals, who ignore this
life long education aspect in their professional career, run the risk of
technological obsolescence and probably do not raise in their profession due
to outdated knowledge they possess.
Apart from the need to overcome obsolescence and to ensure job growth and
promotion, other reasons for continuing educations are:
. Filling the gap between formal college education and
the need of the industrial community.
. New job assignments and job enlargement.
. Greater responsibilities in new areas.
. Greater job appreciation and satisfaction-job enrichment.
. Emergence of New professional, industrial and commercial needs such as
licensing, certification and certification.
. Complying with new company career development programmes.
. Learning the technologies required because of mergers and acquisitions.
. Introducing new technologies to developing nations to add in their
technology transfer and growth.
WHO NEEDS CONTINUING EDUCATION?
There are five million people looking for continuing education in the Indian
subcontinent. They can be broadly classified into 3 groups.
. The certificate holder looking for Diploma, Diploma holder looking for
post graduate and post graduate holder looking for Ph.D. in their branch of
Engineering, Technology and Management.
. The professionals interested in acquiring knowledge in Modern Printing and
Packing techniques, and get certificate for enriching their career prospects
by way of job incentives etc.
. Some professionals are interested in acquiring information in specific
disciplines for the sake of acquiring knowledge and not for certification
which may be called as non-credit programs.
ROLE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Continuing education has become such an important means of promoting social
and economic developments, that most of the countries are investing
considerably towards this. It is a continuous process to update information
and technology, apart from the formal courses. The working
engineers/technocrats should have an opportunity to educate themselves on a
day to day basis through Internet, TV and Newspapers.
The Continuing education is taking a greater momentum and it is spreading
throughout the world. This will defiantly call for a networking of the
Institutions in terms of utilization of infrastructure and expertise. The
strength of this activity can be extended to other countries through
networking of the countries.
With the rapid rate the technologies are changing and
even faster rates at which new technologies and disciplines are emerging,
the In service technical personnel as well as the employers are desperately
looking for organised services through which they could get assistance in
periodically updating their knowledge and professional skills in emerging
fields as microelectronics, computer technology, automation of industrial
operations, laser beam technology, sophisticated instrumentation system,
optimisation of resources, energy conservation, environmental protection
etc. Hence sound programme of continuing education for the employed manpower
has to be developed to provide ample opportunity for lifelong learning.
Technology is the driving force of industrial development. As interpreters
of technology, printing engineers have a major role to play in Industrial
competition. It is estimated that two third of the technology need by the
year 2008, has not yet been invented while three out of four engineers
working now will still be active then. In many areas it is also estimated
that 20 percent of an engineer's knowledge becomes obsolete every year.
It is important to have individuals responsible for
developing continuing education. The reason is that unless people have
continuing education as their main activity, they will not be able to
experiment and explore the new opportunities that are most likely to produce
the greatest impact. Additionally, the continuing education that is most
needed is the most difficult to provide.
Today's Printing Technology is especially exciting with the multitude of
carrier options available for today's graphic communication professionals.
This includes management positions in Prepress (DTP), Press Room, Printing
Management, Estimating, Customer Service, Technical Support Service,
Multimedia, Screen Imaging, Distribution & Sales. The demand for printed
products continues to grow. With more than 18,000 of firms & more than one
million employees, the printing graphic arts industry is India's largest
business. As on now, printing/ Packaging/Advertising industry is one of the
fastest growing segment with the introduction of computers, scanners &
Imaging Technology, etc.
